Minorities and the Poor Actually
by Maureen Blum, |
O n August 23, 2000, the Institute for Justice released a statement on a recent Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies poll concerning school choice programs. The Institute for Justice statement shows that 71 percent of African Americans with children support school choice. Seventy-two percent of African Americans with an annual income of less than $15,000 support school choice. A survey of the general population with annual income less than $15,000 showed that 59 percent support school choice.
In response to the question, "Would you support a voucher system where parents would get money from the government to send their children to the public, private, or parochial school of their choice?" sixty percent of those surveyed answered "yes." Thus, it appears from the poll numbers, that poor people of all races show majority support for school choice programs.
